Exercise: Create a database with your group

To make the database more transparent, we have added extra categories. The categories we added are language, feelings, 'corona', events, digital / non-digital and canceled / postponed. We used colors to indicate the additional categories.

Exercise: Analogue algorithm

Create a set of rules that anyone can follow, which leads to an interesting conclusion. Also called pseudocode.

- If anyone mentions corona, the sentence will be filled with a red colour.
- The data will be ordered by date.
- If you click on a time, it will show how long it takes until that time
- If somebody mentions a song, that song will be played for five seconds.
- If you double click on a song, the whole lyrics will be shown.
- If you type in another language, these will be filtered and put in a temporary storage.
- The maximum number of words per table is 20.

Exercise: Word occurence

Count the occurrences of a “string” in every row of the dataset. This can be a character, a word or several words together. See if you can choose something that has meaning.

I chose words from channel, source and destination and filled the following formulas in Excel.

What I found out later is if you change the word in the formula to a cell (for example, D26), Excel counts how many times the word in that cell (D26) occurs.
So if you than change the word in the cell, you don't have to change it in the formula.

Een Nederlands algoritme dat op röntgenfoto’s corona besmettingen identificeert, staat in de startblokken om de wereld over te gaan.

Waar veel bedrijven hun omzet zien kelderen, komt PostNL om in het werk. Door corona bestellen mensen namelijk veel online. Ook bezorgt PostNL veel primaire levensbehoeften als voedsel en medicijnen voor ouderen.

De tekst waarschuwt voor de gevaren van gezichtsherkenningstechnologie en legt uit dat het inbreuk doet op verschillende rechten.

Het is een informatief artikel dat een nieuwe techniek introduceert dat relevant is in deze tijd. Het geeft hoop en is gericht aan de zorg.

De tekst is een interview met Herna Verhagen, ceo van PostNL. PostNL heeft een belangrijke economische en maatschappelijke functie; ze stellen veel winkels in staat winkel te blijven.

Het zo snel mogelijk verbieden van gezichtsherkenningstechnologie kan voorkomen dat Nederland steeds verder afglijdt naar een totale surveillancestaat, waarin niemand kan ontkomen aan het alziend oog van de overheid of van anderen.

Het biedt een oplossing aan de tekort aan testen. Als een algoritme kan testen of je corona hebt, worden de huidige testen overbodig.

Eavesdropping, a collaborative exhibition with Liquid Architecture and the Melbourne Law School is now showing at the Potter Museum of Art.

Facial Weaponization Suite protests against biometric facial recognition–and the inequalities these technologies propagate–by making “collective masks” in workshops that are modeled from the aggregated facial data of participants, resulting in amorphous masks that cannot be detected as human faces by biometric facial recognition technologies. The masks are used for public interventions and performances. One mask, the Fag Face Mask, generated from the biometric facial data of many queer men’s faces, is a response to scientific studies that link determining sexual orientation through rapid facial recognition techniques. Another mask explores a tripartite conception of blackness: the inability of biometric technologies to detect dark skin as racist, the favoring of black in militant aesthetics, and black as that which informatically obfuscates. A third mask engages feminism’s relations to concealment and imperceptibility, taking veil legislation in France as a troubling site that oppressively forces visibility. A fourth mask considers biometrics’ deployment as a security technology at the Mexico-US border and the nationalist violence it instigates. These masks intersect with social movements’ use of masking as an opaque tool of collective transformation that refuses dominant forms of political representation.

Het Covid-19 virus heeft in korte tijd het dagelijks leven in Nederland volledig op zijn kop gezet. Besmettingen stapelden zich op en de adviezen zijn duidelijk: blijf zoveel mogelijk binnen en mijd onnodig sociaal contact. In een iconische toespraak op 16 maart sprak Rutte: ‘Het zal een moeilijke tijd worden, maar samen komen we hier doorheen’. We hebben een groot deel van onze vrijheid in moeten leveren voor de bestrijding van het virus. Dat zet ons tot nadenken wat er echt belangrijk is in het leven, en vooral wie. Van alle kanten krijgt de zorg ineens respect, maar waren ze niet al lang onmisbaar? Want ook voor corona deden ze wat ze konden, ook al werd er flink op de zorg bezuinigd.

We krijgen nu pas de realisatie wat belangrijk voor ons is en waar we meer waarde aan hechten dan we in eerste instantie dachten. Omdat veel fysieke winkels gesloten zijn, wordt er veel meer online besteld. ‘Door corona beseffen mensen ineens dat PostNL belangrijk werk doet’, claimt Herna Verhagen, ceo van PostNL. PostNL bezorgt bijvoorbeeld ook veel primaire levensbehoeften als voedsel en medicijnen voor ouderen. Naast de zorg en pakketbezorgers, speelt hygiëne in de bestrijding tegen corona een grote rol. Schoonmakers die normaliter onderaan de maatschappelijke ladder staan zijn nu onmisbaar.

Wellicht leidt deze crisis tot een herwaardering van eerder ondergewaardeerde sectoren. De realisatie dat vitale banen de ruggegraat zijn van onze samenleving is er wel al.
